Our Lifeboats

We have two lifeboats stationed at Plymouth. A Severn Class All-weather Lifeboat and B Class Atlantic 85 Inshore Lifeboat.

All Weather Lifeboat -Severn Class (Sybil Mullen Glover)

Our Severn Class Lifeboat 17-35 was placed on service on 11 February 2003. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth officially named the lifeboat Sybil Mullen Glover at Queen Anne’s Battery Marina on 23 July 2003.

Moored afloat in the marina she is as an all-weather lifeboat, the Severn Class can take on the worst sea conditions and comes into her own on long offshore searches and rescues. She may be the largest lifeboat in the RNLI fleet, but our Severn class lifeboat is very agile. Should she capsize in severe weather, she will automatically right herself within a few seconds.

The Severn Class has a crew compliment of 7. A displacement 42 tonnes and can reach 25 knots of speed.

Our Severn Class lifeboat is fitted with twin Caterpillar 3412 TA 27 litre V12 turbocharged and intercooled 1,250hp diesel engines helping her achieve her 25 knots of speed.

There is comprehensive medical equipment onboard including oxygen and full resuscitation kit, Entonox for pain relief, large responder bag and three different stretchers. The Severn Class lifeboat carries a small Y boat, which is an inflatable daughter boat, complete with a 15hp outboard engine. This small boat is ideal for rescues near rocks and shallow waters.

The Severn Class also carries a portable salvage pump in a watertight container which can be taken onboard boats taking on water to try and save them from sinking.

Inshore Lifeboat -Atlantic 85 Class (Annabel E Jones)

Our Atlantic 85 became operational at Plymouth in September 2019 following an intense training period to familiarise the crew with the new boat. She replaced our long serving Atlantic 75 lifeboat Millennium Forester who has helped to save countless lives at sea since her arrival to the city in 2003

Our current B Class is B-908 Annabel E Jones. She arrived in July 2019. She is launched from an aquadock in the marina.

The Atlantic 85 Class has a crew compliment of 4. A displacement 1.8 tonnes and can reach 35 knots of speed. Her endurance can be up to 3hrs There is a capacity for 20 casualties.

Although she is an inshore lifeboat, designed to operate in shallower waters, the B class can deal with fairly challenging open-sea conditions as well; up to near gale force 7 by day and force 6 at night. The B class lifeboat is ideal for operating close to beaches, cliffs and rocks. She can even be beached in an emergency with no damage to her engines. She also has the capacity to self-right in the event of a capsize.

In addition to night vision equipment, the B class lifeboat carries a searchlight and parachute illuminating flares to light up the surrounding area, helping to keep crew members safe as well as locate those in need of help.

The medical equipment stowed aboard includes oxygen and full resuscitation kit, responder bag and multi-purpose ambulance pouch. The Atlantic 85 can also carry a stretcher if needed.
